Prior combat service was shown by placement of you former organisational insignia on the upper right sleeve. The Meritorious Unit Commendation patch was also worn on the right sleeve over WW1 wound stripes or, more commonly, where they are shown. If you were Army Air Corps and had a specialty qualification patch, it went on the lower right sleeve also. MUC would have been placed above it as this was a unit award and was worn for a prescribed time. Many did not wear it. You also see former combat unit patches sewn on the lower right sleeve. I've seen 2 photos and an Ike with this. It's odd and no one is really sure about the practice more than it was localized and VERY unofficial. For paratroopers, the patch on your overseas hat depended on whether you were enlisted or comissioned. Emlisted on the left, officers on the right. It is not uncommon to have no DI's on the uniform. Of the hundreds I've had/have, most haven't had any. Patch use on combat uniforms has only 1 consistancy.. That there is none. Regs. say none was to be worn, but I've seen rank, ran and unit, unit, you name it. Hand sewn, machine sewn, theatre made, issue, all manner. Whatever they got, they used.

and make sure any awards you wear (without addressing the issue of whether to wear awards not awarded to you) have been researched completely.
for instance, i wear a MUC (the "golden toilet seat") on the lower right sleeve of my Class A's, but just remember it was specifically for non-combatant units. in other words, if you're doing regular infantry, it's a no-no. you guys get the CIB/PUC/forrageres instead.
and theatre ribbons, etc. are often date-specific, so make sure your impression was "active" at the time and place the award was for.
patches on the right shoulder seem to me to be a very-late-war/occupation custom, but i wear one anyway, it's a way to pay homage to a unit that is special to you. besides, i intended my Class A's to have a "V-E Day" look anyway.
as for general patch wear, as always, research what your particular unit wore at the time you're portraying. PTO wore insignia much less than ETO, for instance.
