U.S. 3rd Infantry Division: Nicknames and Motto's...
"ROCK OF THE MARNE":The nickname given to the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division for its steadfast dedication and determination to hold the line and in stopping countless German attacks upon their lines during the Marne Defensive on July 14th-18th, 1918. Also the first action of the U.S. 30th and 38th Infantry Regiments of the U.S. 6th Infantry Brigade.
"NOUS RESTERONS LA": The motto given to the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division after their commanding officer's reply to General Pershing upon his asking if the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division was going to fall back...Maj. Gen. Dickman calmly replied.."Nous Resterons La"..meaning..."We are staying here!"..
"SAVIOR'S OF ANZIO": The nickname given to the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division for their steadfast dedication and determination to hold the line preventing a German breakthrough to the Anzio beachhead on February 16th-18th, 1944 and again on the 29th-30th, 1944.
"BLUE AND WHITE DEVIL'S": The nickname given to the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division by the German forces and their commander, Field Marshall Kesselring in Italy.
