Yes, in North Africa they were used throughout the campaign. But in Sicily, Salerno, and Southern France they were used for the landing but 2 or 3 days later the were ditched. Some guys even customized their own armbands (see 'Individual Gear and Personal Items of the GI in Europe 1942-1945' by James B. Klokner page 10)

Our own Private Pinto used to wear a flag arm band... He stopped wearing it after RLee Ermey confused him with an Airborne Trooper at Reading!
But yes, US troops wore flags in North Africa and Souther France. Whenever they might encounter French Troops. Mostly so the French would not get us confused with British (Whom they would sometimes shoot at).

In my post I might not have gotten this across but nearly everyone wore them in those campaigns. Both Airborne, Infantry, and the naval landing parties(USS Texas's landing party landed in North Africa. -Josh

I saw some picts of mifflin and guys had things covering their left sholder. What you see in the pictures from mifflin were gas Brassards. They were used on D-day to detect Gas. Dean
