Afew months ago some guys in my unit talked to a AA gun crew member. Here are some of the things I remember from talking to him. He never slept in a fox-hole, he said they always had a tent (GP tent) He manned a 40mm Anti-aircraft Gun mounted on a Half-track, one day as they drove down a road, some German fighters strafed them, he could see the bullets striking the ground on each side of the truck he was in. The plane made a second pass and was shot down. He was credited with 2 kills. At the end of the war he tried to bring home a K-98 but it was 3 inches longer than the largest shipping box he was allowed to send home, so he found a hack-saw, cut off 3 inches of the barrel, and shipped it home. After he got back to the US he took it to a gun smith, and had him remount the sight onto the shortened barrel. He said it still worked great for deer hunting.

Well I guess it was the largest box he could get his hands on. It was funney the way he said it, "So I just got a hack-saw and cut it off."

Nice story! At the end of the war he tried to bring home a K-98 but it was 3 inches longer than the largest shipping box he was allowed to send home, so he found a hack-saw, cut off 3 inches of the barrel, and shipped it home. Why didn´t he carve the rifle ? Then he didn´t have to "destroy" the gun.

To strip an M1 that quick is un-natural these days but was probley considered the norm back then. And the guys got then home legaly by getting a form that proves that it is captured material and that it is now in your possesion.I still have my great uncles, theres 2 or 3 i think.
