History:
The Hobo roll first came into wide spread use during the great depression, as a way for Hobos to carry a blanket/ tarp and personal items without using a bag and roll. This method of carrying items were ideal for the soldiers in the ETO/ MTO. There are man different ways of making a Hobo roll, using a blanket, shelter half or both. I have opted to show a roll with both.

HOW TO:
The Hobo Roll I have done for you today is to use as your main pack, not in conjuction with a haversack, but maybe with a 3 snap. This hobo roll is good for maybe a week or so on the line, with your toiletries, rations, extra clothing, blanket, and shelter half (to use as a tarp or lining for a fox hole)
STEP ONE:
Put out everything you might need for a week on the line (rations would be brought up to your squad so that is not a worry)
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020283.jpg
In my Hobo Roll I have: (everything original unless stated any other way)
1 pair of US army long johns
2 pairs of US army issue socks
1 US Army half wool blanket (bayonet Inc. repro)
1 US army Shelter half
1 leather toiletry kit
1 US army Huck towel (WPG repro)
1 US Red Cross house wife (WWII Supply Room repro, best ever)
3 boxes of K rations, 1 breakfast, 1 dinner, 1 supper. (WWII Supply room repro, best ones out there)
4 blocks of landegge (a german version of salami that could be found on a German or in a house in the country) wrapped in brown wax paper.
STEP 2
Put down the half or whole blanket on the shelter half so it looks like so

STEP 3
Lay down long johns or whatever you have decided to pack as your largest flat item.

STEP 4
Lay down your socks so that they are flat and will be rolled with the shelter half not into the roll.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020289.jpg
STEP 5
Lay the huck towel at the head of the blanket.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020290.jpg
STEP 6
Put the toiletry kit down on the towel. Make sure when you put the kit down that it is either on the left side or the right but never in the middle of the roll. Why ? you will learn later.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020292.jpg
STEP 7
Lay the house wife on the opposite side of the toiletry kit.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020293.jpg
STEP 8
Pull the tail of the shelter half to make a strait edged front.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020303.jpg

Place your rations at about a 1 foot intervals switching sides each time.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020307.jpg
STEP 10
Fold the sides of the shelter in so they touch each other, but only that much you want it to be wider then the folded blanket.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020308.jpg
STEP 11
Roll the hobo roll from the side that has the toiletry kit in it.
i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc212/youthreenactor/How%20To/Hobo%20Roll/P1020309.jpg
STEP 12
