These are the typical packs used. There are as I said, other types of packs such as commo packs, gas mask bags, packboards and such that were used to carry equiptment. I have only focused on types used commonly. The most prevelent are the haversacks. Musette bags were mostly used by officers, paratroopers(they often carried more than 1), and vehicle personell. Not that the common grunt didn't get them, just not as often. Guys would beg, borrow or steal them if they could. Some older troops got them on reissue. However, As I said, haversacks are more common. Most GI's used thier gas mask bags as musette bags to carry thier personals and souvineers.
Here's a look at the color differences. The top row are all WW1 dated M1910 packs. The next is a M1910 on the left then M1928's. The bottom row is all M1928 packs.
s82.photobucket.com/albums/j261/old_soldier/83rd/?action=view¤t=DSC00002.jpg
The main differences aside from color of the M1910 and the M1928 are the meat can pouch closure and the back strap. The M1910 had a button closure and the M1928 had a buckle.
s82.photobucket.com/albums/j261/old_soldier/83rd/?action=view¤t=DSC00012.jpg
The M1910 had a single hook back strap, the M1928 a double.

You will also find M1910 packs that were rebuilt to conform to the new 1928 pattern. Sometimes the meat can was changed, sometimes not.. This one has a very early meat can pouch with pressed fiber or paper button.

That gives you 3 types of backs
s82.photobucket.com/albums/j261/old_soldier/83rd/?action=view¤t=DSC00008.jpg
You will see them in different material too. This doesn't show it very well, but the closer is like a laundry bag material, the back is canvas.
s82.photobucket.com/albums/j261/old_soldier/83rd/?action=view¤t=DSC00005.jpg
These don't always match in color any better than the canvas ones do.
s82.photobucket.com/albums/j261/old_soldier/83rd/?action=view¤t=DSC00006.jpg
That's not just fading, that's 2 distinct colors. I saw a darker green one too. The colors are the same for the canvas ones also. They run from tan to dark green. Not OG or OD7, but not to far off. The one on the right in the middle row is a USMC one. Other than the manufacturer and date, there is no US stamp. These will work for us, but they are rare and valuable.. Don't destroy one for reenacting. There are plenty of Army ones out there to be had. Hope this comes in hand along with the other posted info.
