What I am saying is you don't have to spend 2000$ on a kit. If you did I wouldn't be a reenactor. I can easily spend 500$ on a kit and have all period correct items. And when you grow out of them, [glow=red,2,300]SELL IT[/glow]

Tom
Half you kids buy boots and wear them 24-7-365...366 in leap years. There isn't enough bowling shoe disinfectant in the world to get me to wear a pair of used boots that have had your stinky feet in them.
Now take a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars in monochrome for $44.99, Wrangler jeans for $20.00 at K-Mart and a shirt that's already hanging in you closet for free and you've got 1944 acceptable traveling clothes to get you to and from events that your mom won't chringe every time you climb out of the mini van.

You'll use original gear that dirty GI's slept in for years but not use a used repro pair of boots?? I buy used Items including boots. And many people do too. I sold mine for more then I bought them for. And I have no Idea what your talking about. Wrangler jeans? Converse Chuck Taylor allstars?

I sold mine for more then I bought them for. And I have no Idea what your talking about. Wrangler jeans? Converse Chuck Taylor allstars? I saw a young girl at Willoughby Gathering of Eagles wearing HBT Coverals and Keds tennis shoes and she really got smiles from the WWII vets and their wives. She's still growing and womens sizes are way different then mens in price and availablility. Consider for a moment Finsters daughter thinks Miley Cyrus is an old lady. For Finster to buy her WWII womens shoes would be seriously impossible if not stupid. Some units don't want there members traveling to and from events in kit also. I beleive the HRS has also put it in their rules as their interpretation of the Stolen Valor Act. If Charlie is traveling from NJ to North East Ohio with his mom he's hopefully not doing it in wool during August and although Wrangler is a post war company they bought operations off Dickies, Levis and other war manufacturers and they are the only blue jean manufacturer in the US manufacturing in the US. You weren't around when the Army bought berets off South Africa and China when the new black berets came out. It caused one hell of a stink even though most Ranger and SF berets were made in Canada and the UK. They probably all were getting wool from India, Pakistan and Afganistan but the fact they were sewn in China and Africa really caused a stink. Nothing like Warlord Inc shooting down US choppers while their moms and children were working in sweat shops making the hats. As for jungle rot and boots, I was Infantry for too long to be sharing boots. It's actually an offense in the Army to share boots and falls under "failure to repair". Foot fungus is at the top of the list for keeping Infantrymen off the battlefield. I don't wear used boots, socks, t-shirts, or underdrawers due to athletes foot, jock itch and under arm fungus all being Tinea. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlete's_foot Jim

JIM GUESS WHAT? I always go to events in kit. When you see the two young girls I've mentioned you'll appreciate under the circumstances it works. I'm suggesting it for those who want to go to school and look retro and not so much like a nerd or for a first or second event while waiting for kit to come in from our vendors. Having seen people wearing Air Jordans...well it just don't look right. It would also be a real easy closet display for your mom to throw together with tennis shoes being real cheap at any of the strip mall shoe stores. As for what you said about foot fungi and other stuff I am a little scared now. Grandpa Marquart started out as a YMCA Director and went on to teach Science and Physical Education in our local school. He wore Chuck Taylors during WWII while stationed at Benning and as a teacher after the Army so I kind of push them a little too much. I won't stop pushing foot sanitation as most of the fungus can and does travel and can really mess up your week. Also about two years ago Converse did a run of WWII repro's that were kind of neat. Oh by the way, Do not make fun of Erkle he rocks I didn't make fun of Erkele or Elijah. Then again the Polka Hall of Fame is in Euclid, Ohio and I'm a fan of Weird Al and Drew Carey... Jim

Lil Beav Your mom will appreciate you not sweating in wools and smelling up the mini van. And for the love of god use deodorant, it isn't farbe and I don't want your mom looking to kick my rump. Not that I'm gonna hit on her but I figure she may have a sister or cousin. Who knows, Ashley Tisdale is from New Jersey so I can always hope. As you like donating to shoes4africa I figure you wouldn't mind shopping at stores whose profits help the needy, that's why I'm suggesting the Salvation Army and Episcopal "second time around" stores. Here in Ohio, we do church rummage sales but I’ve noticed that in your neck of the woods they have shops open year round. And I hope I scared you guys into spraying the hell out of used boots. I’ve been wearing the new antifungal socks that are current issue myself and my feet don’t stink at all. shop.ebay.com/items/?_nkw=Military+socks&_fromfsb=&_trksid=m270Oh, and if your authenticity officer is checking your drawers and socks...well Uncle Chester is probably on the local Predator List and you need to find a new unit. Foot inspection is a real part of WWII and current military practices but if the dude is taking pictures and wants to lick your feet, he has issues. Jim

When I first started I usually went to events in full uniform. That ended quickly, especial after driving 8 hours, in August, with 3 other guys in uniform! Its not a fun thing. Also we have a rule about no boots warn in vehicles. This after someone put a massive tear in the leather with the buckle on his boots. Also we have a rule about not leaning rifles against vehicles either after the same guy put a massive gash in the bumper of the same SUV.
Honestly, if your worried about authenticity while getting to an event you should be driving a '40 Ford not a '04 Toyota. Otherwise its kind of pointless. When traveling to an event my unit all wears our official Unit Tee-shirts. That way we are still a group.

I would just pack all my stuff in the trunk and drive to the event in my regular clothes and put them on when arriving. Why would you need a period uniform while driving to the event?

Willy and Tom make great points. Be carefull around cars with all the buckles on gear.
Conneaut has a building down by the beach that is good for changing in. It's for showering of swimmers and sun bathers and really all you need it for is the trousers. It also has modern facilities and a snack bar so mom won't have to use a porta john or starve. There are also alot of shaded areas so she isn't going to bake in the sun.
