OK here goes my rant.
I have been on this forum since November of 2007 and always when there is a thread about young reenactors (or youthreenactors) someone will always chime in "Well you can't really reenact till your 18 anyway so you only need to get...." You get the picture. This not true not even close! You can reenact when your young, Living History (which I think is the most important part of the Hobby I think) is always open for you. I have been doing living History for almost a year now and I have never run into a problem, ever. I get the occasional " Your Charles ? I.. Ah I expected you to be a little older.." Yes, being young does have its limitations but only so much. Yes, you cannot be in battles, which is not entirely true either. Some Living History events may not let you set up, well who cares!! Go anyway just walk on, be a walking display. I am not saying go out and buy all your uniform and gear now. I did and I regret it sometimes, I like it yes but it is not everybody's style. I bought ATF rough out boots, for $100 and now they hardly fit. I was stupid. Buy cheap bad boots and then when you stop growing buy good boots.
Need a unit ? Why ? Not that many units will take you at 13, 14 be your own unit (one reason why the YRO exists, to see the web site click on my "www" ). If you make a name for your self a unit may ask you to join, that is what happened to me with the second rangers.
If your kit is not 100% correct ( ex. wrong boots, wrong helmet ) do not set up please wait ! By doing that you give a bad name to fellow youths who try to make it into the hobby. Sometimes reenactors stereotype youth reenactors as something bad, I have bore the brunt of this at events. To over come that I try even harder and I have succeeded, in a way, I am no longer treated like that, I have gained respect from some reenactors.
We ,young guys, are the next generation of reenactors, we will be the ones to carry on the hobby for decades to come. We need to learn from the old hands, I have met young reenactors who do not do the research do not wear period correct garments, and most of the time they are not willing to learn from the guys who came before them. We all need to learn, there will always be more stuff to research, we need to keep the hobby in good hands. We will not be the generation of Farbs.
WOW I really strayed from my topic. OK so for young guys who hear "you cannot reenact till your 18" it is not true do not listen to them.
