Ok fine. I am against using french boots, unless you have growing feet. The soles on them are all wrong and you can spot them even when people are wearing them because the soles are big and they stick out. A quick fix is running to the local cobbler shop and having leather soles added. I can appreciate growing feet as mine did, my thought is that these boots are going to be bought and sold amongst youthful reenactors for years and the price of the soles can be pro-rated with each resale. You mean replace the soles on them to correct ones. Wouldn't that cost a pretty penny?

However it's usually cheaper to re-sole then to replace them...well, other then the cheap Payless shoes. I'm not talking about correct either, brown leather would be tons better then the black rubber vibran soles. Jim

But double buckles had a full rubber sole, so it would be equally farby to have the leather soles. -Josh

barrelhunter what are leather soles. I have never seen a shoe or boot with a leather sole there all rubber. By the time you finish going through the time and money to modify them you might as well get one from Old Paratrooper for 90$ shipped. Thats just my opinion.

The reasoning for leather is once dirtied up they look more like period soles then the 1950's and 1960's vibran. Look at these period soles and consider the sole is dark and once oiled leather would look the same when photographed. smg.photobucket.com/albums/v624/Barrelhunter/?action=view¤t=cPVCbWU5.jpgPersonally, I'd go with John's boots and wear them for more then reenacting if my dogs were still growing. Not like they wouldn't be comfortable for Fall, Winter and Spring. Jim

He knows that the soles on the Service shoes were rubber. He is saying the leather soles would look like worn out rubber.

I don't recall what the proper US "last" is called but it's different from current and period civilian (ok, surfed Tom Mattimores site and it's a Munson last). www.civilwarboots.com/Last I asked my local shop he could re-sole them in leather or vibram. No disrespect to the guys under 25, but you freaks of nature are going to grow till about 25 so I expect corner cutting on boots. Jim

I did a quick e-bay search and came up with two pair of replacement soles one in 7 - 7 1/2 (used) and the other 10 - 10 1/2. No heals are currently listed. Also, these are based on US soles and god only knows what the French are basing their boots on, probably an amphibian with webbed feet.

Wouldn't it end up costing around 80$ for French boots after you buy new soles and get some one to put them in? Why bother buy Old Para's.
