Impression: 90th ID , 315th Eng. Bn. Time: Late July 1944, The Island. After being flung into combat on D+4 the 90th ID had not had a rest. After heavy days of fighting for hill 122 they were then told to take The Island. The Island was surrounded on three sides by heavy swamps and on the North by the river Seves. The attack began on the 23rd of July and the 90th was subjected to heavy Artillery fire and MG fire from the South side of the Seves. One company got to the South bank but soon fell back due to lack of reinforcements. On the 27th of July the 90th finally broke through. Well here is my impression. This is my impression for next year.

Looks good, but if you don't feel like passing out , loose the jacket.

Even the 78th doesn't wear wools to Reading! By the end of last wear, I was down to a teeshirt (with the sleeves hacked off), HBT pants and hat. (I was pretty PTO... I got a great tan though!) helmet, wools, HBT jacket were all lost very very quickly.

I had wools on and I was fine, in WW2 guys didn't have the option to go change into HBTs if it was hot, I still haven't seen a single photo of 103d guys in HBTs..... Wools are great!

One, the 103d landed in NOVEMBER!! It was friggen cold already! We're not talking November, we're talking June. Two, they wore HBTs a lot stateside and on the ships over. I wouldn't doubt if some guys kept theirs for layering. Three, in Normandy in June of '44 it wasn't all that hot. You never really hear GIs complaining about how hot he was, only how cold. The climate in Europe is MUCH different then over here... Very few days were "hot" by our standards. And then still the temp still dropped down very far at night... to the point where guys used sleeping bags or blankets. Four, you almost DIED last year. Your face was bright red. I need a new set of HBTs, mine are horrible (The pants are white and the shirt is dark green turning orange) If I dont pick up a set there, im going with Wool pants and HBT shirt.
