Usually, I wear my HBT trousers and jacket or the M41 jacket. But if I am invitet to an event with a special topic, like Normandy, I have to wear wool trousers and wool shirts.

well i was told by a vet they wore the HBT alone and the HBT instead of jackets over the shirt interesting because you can see in some pics that the guys are really bundled up but in others they have there shirts unbuttoned and no under shirt with wools . make me cringe just thinking of wools on my bare skin

HBT were worn alot in Normandy alone. see pics of dogfaces fighting around St LO and in operation cobra. You don't see HBT used alot in the MTO because it seems the 1943 HBT's (the most common type) didn't come till 1944 and in the other 2 invasions left, Anzio and Southern France, Southern France was the only place wear you see them used alot. And besides Salerno most Italy is cold even in the summer. I was in italy about 2 years ago the 2 warmest WW2 battle sites I visited were Salerno and Anzio. About it being cold in Normandy it was pretty Hot and raining till July then it cleared up and became very hot. I was there in late June 3 years ago it rained everyday all the time, but when it did not rain it was very hot.

Many of the pictures from operation Cobra and especially St Lo are of the 83rd ID. That's the unit I belong to. We are in touch with one of the supply sgts and many of the other vets. They did not wear their HBT's alone. They are emphatic that they wore them over their wools from landing in Normandy in early July till they reached the Elbe river. They also received a complete gear reissue prior to embarking from England. They went into battle with HBT's over wools and 43 jackets with rough out boots and leggings.
Wool breathes it really isn't bad in the summer. At least I have never had a problem wearing it.

I have many pictures of the 103d wearing the cammo HBT jump suits (no two piece) state side. However once they arrived in Southern France they disappeared. I assume the men heard the horror stories from Normandy and trashed them. So until November '44 they wore the Wools and a mix of '41s and '43s. In November they received their boot packs and many more sets of '43s (Pants and jackets).
