one of the forts that the 90th attacked and they could not break it cause it was so strong and most of it was underground. They decided to get 4 105mm guns and try and blast the gate down and it didn't work So they said "lets try and break the frame on the gate" and they did and the door crashed down but it still took another day to clear the place because it was all little tunnels under the fort. I'd suggest doing a Google search of Mossel and Mosel river castles, as there is a different spelling in the two languages. Edit: This area is the Franco Germanic cross roads and the blend of spelling and words creates a dialect that differs from High Deutch. Keep that in mind when doing Google research on both sides of the border.I spent a weekend at Burg Eltz in Cochem, Germany and can tell you the Mosel river valley is formidable. With defending Artillery, having the advantage and the thick walls the castles them selves are a hurdle, but add machine gun emplacements into three-foot thick enclosures and it would be suicide to attempt an assault. Imagine having to maneuver to a point where you were too low for the machine guns to traverse but potato mashers could be dropped directly onto your helmet. Add the walls and ground turning deflecting shrap right into you and you can appreciate the heartache of the assaults. Here's Burg Eltz. www.mosel-valley-germany.european-vacation.net/pictures/mosel-river/fr-index9.htmlwww.biketracks.net/mossel_river.htmwww.canalandcompany.com/Charlemagne%20Moselle.htmRemember you're attacking from the south on the east side of the river where the castles are located while the enemy artillery has you snaking down a narrow road with mountain to your right and river to your left. All the while, the enemy artillery to the west has all the maneuver room and tank support. They also have rail logistical support while you're using the Red Ball express for Ammo, fuel and rations. Also, Germany has had two wars to do surveying work, with the final idea that this is the disputed land, which both world wars were fought for. Jim
