One of Mr. Murphy’s laws is “Never interrupt your enemy when he’s making a mistake.” You guys are competing against the Dirty SOB’s so if you ding them they will improve and might just take home the trophy for best unit because you erred in your arguments. I look at Fritz on the right and see a 1939 wound badge with Eastern Front campaign medal. I also see an “American Legionnaire” who may very well be a disabled veteran and well; I have trouble throwing the FARB card at that one. These appear to be German Tanker Goggles, and would be appropriate for someone who fought in Africa or Sicily, and went onto Market Garden. hosting.90thidpg.us/Greaser/FARB/farbshot09%20Sep.%2024.gifNow I could throw on the reading glasses for the next ones but believe they’re “American Optics” aviators which are period correct. I’d look for dug out Doug pictures to show a pair but I’m feeling lazy. hosting.90thidpg.us/Greaser/FARB/farbshot04%20Sep.%2024.gifThis one looks like me at Hummvee School in 1984(?) and I’d like to hear its back-story. hosting.90thidpg.us/Greaser/FARB/farbshot03%20Sep.%2024.gifI’ve got a photo in my minds eye of Finster holding a Mauser pistol at Willoughby Gathering of Eagles. He was lecturing the audience on the history of the weapon and doing a brilliant job of it. If I’d snapped a picture, you guys would be giving it tee holey hell for it being Farbe if I’d presented it out of context. I could also take one of Greasers well-documented photo’s and blast the dog snot out of it but…he’d break my nose…and he researched it well. Please guys, if you want to fight FARB do it with your photo studies, not with these threads. I swear they’ll be your downfall and burn you out real quick. Unless your experts on all things Kraut. I saw the 3,000-cheeseburger post and answered it before it was thrown out. If Lil Beav is like Frostie he’s going to be looking down at my bald spot to see if he can see his reflection in a few years, then I’ll re-nickname him Beretta. Now you guys want FARBE. Here’s a gun that Greaser, Friscan, and Finster didn’t know existed until I showed it to them. It’s an 1893 Springfield Rolling block Carbine specifically made for fire departments, utility companies, and maritime use. Note the case is only 31 and ¼ inches long. smg.photobucket.com/albums/v624/Barrelhunter/?action=view¤t=LifeGun.jpgPhoto courtesy of the American La France Museum, Charlotte, SC. Guys, from a shooters and gun collectors point view; the video of the WWII guns was hilarious. I’ve seen the M-1’s with detachable magazines that were designed during WWII to hold BAR mags. They lost out to the 8 round clips due to supply issues involving the magazines. Trust me, in a couple of years you’ll revisit that video and laugh. Jim

Jim, The Dirt SOB's are not my enemy, I do not want them to be farbs forever I want to help become better reenactors. Yes anything can be taken out of context and look different then it really is. This past week I have just seen TO many Farbs and it has come down to "why are people so out of it that they think a black holster, French boots, and a postwar helmet is OK? " If I could I would go one by one and help people, and not to give it away to much, there are other 90th reenactors who have (from Greaser and I) not taken help offered, but instead continue to do it wrong, which brings up the point " If you know its wrong why do it ? Lil beav They want to honor the veterans and all but they say "who cares" "Does it really matter that much if my holster is black or my boot has the wrong heel" "What does it matter it isn't hurting the veterans or anybody else if I have some little thing wrong". Of course some of them are just misinformed and don't know that there boot heel is wrong but some do believe this and it pretty hard to change there opinion, especially when your like 20 years younger then them(or more).

Tom Nope. Weapons testing and innovation has made some real strange weapons. There are M-1 Garand experimental models adapted for BAR magazines that never left The US Armory at Springfield. There are 9mm Browning pistols that competed head to head against the Luger for German Testing. There are .45 caliber Lugers that competed against Colt in 1911 and if you guys don’t find the humor in that video, you really need to study up on the original weapons, and why they are funny. Kalashnikov was a WWII vet and like the Reds or not he designed one hell of a rifle. Dr. Stoner and his .308 AR-15 did compete against the M-14 and lost due to alloy receivers and plastic grips not function and accuracy. The big problem was the M-14 used enough M-1 Rifle parts Springfield didn’t have to recoup research and development costs the way Armalite would have. Jim

Jim- You were talking about right? The line throwing guns? Back when I was 13 or 14 I did work out in Vermilion at the Great Lakes Historical Society. Down in their basement they have 2 line throwing guns that were center fire conversions of US Civil War 45 cal sharps rifles in 45-40. Boy was that neat as a 14 year old to go out next to the lake and pop off some of these shotgunshell size line throwing blanks with the curator.... Especially considering the barrels on these things must have been only 12 or 14 inches long... Chris-

Greaser
That is exactly what I was talking about. At our end of collecting and walking through museums, we've seen the material necessary to laugh at the video. They've got one of the .30-06 magazine fed rifles at the Seal Museum in Florida.
As to the line throwers we had one of the Springfield .45-70's at the Figgie Museum with a pair of matching S&W Model #2 .22's that were gold plated with mine cut diamonds and two digit serial numbers. We also had Russian Dueling pistols and technically WWII fire trucks. It's why I laugh my rump off during the movie "Night at the Museum." I'd be walking around Figgie and the re-production Rev War Cannon and antique arms while reading guns and ammo and the Wall Street Journal. No one told me when they brought in the life sized bronze sculptures and it scared the hell out of me when I checked the pulse of one sleeping on a chair thinking one of our execs had a heart attack. I hadn't realized you had experience with the .45-40 line throwers; snag the La France picture for your photo bucket. The La France museum wanted it to be available to researchers and it came from a Rawlings catalogue.
Guys
Climb out of your normal impression of the month, as I believe it's burning you out. Do what Finster does and do some Navy Research, hit a museum, read a fictional book that they would have during WWII or rent a Red Ryder video. You don't get Stitch Jedi for just photo essays. If Lil Beav could document Palm Trees in Hoboken for Friscan at a Zoo or amusement park he'd get one. Friscan is at a hitch in a research photo and all it needs is for Lil Beav to say, "hey, there was a Hoboken Zoo during WWII" and here's a WWII picture."
This weeks Stitch Jedi is going to Greaser for politely saying the old bastard is not loosing it and here's a photo from my Farbe collection proving it. As always there can still be multiple awards for the week so, read a W.E.B Griffith book or watch a Roy Rogers pre-war movie and I'll consider it a research project.
I'm also giving Cottonbaler one for saying "That's amazing."
If this were an airsoft board, I'd give one to the kid with the polycarbonate shades for safety. I also can't in good conscience nail the guys in period specs, who are avoiding cataracts owing to the fact they are honoring vets who after surgery told them to protect their eyes. I was my grandfathers seeing eye dog while his eyes recovered and he asked the school nurse to drive him to and from...her husband used to brag that his science teacher was dating his wife. We had a weird family, my grandfather would take my aunt out on a date to Christmas shop for Grandma due to his eyes not being bad enough for surgery he'd walk arm and arm with her so he wouldn't trip on a step.
Keep in mind military boots came in 120 sizes so vendors can't support the hobby the way German Jump Boots, Frog Double Buckles and Black Corcoran’s can. Until ALL the vendors start covering narrow feet, super long or small we are going to see boots with the wrong heel. Lay off the consumer and hammer the vendors...but expect the price of your boots to rise. You'll notice Rollins rants hammer the consumer but don't acknowledge his shortcomings.

Thanks for straightening me out Barrelhunter, every time I finally think I am stitch Jedi worthy another one of my faults is revealed to me. The one thing that really looks bad in my opinion is loose belts, droopy haversacks and untucked wool shirts, and fake smiles ;D Thanks for giving me stitch Jedi. -sgttom

Cotton
I'm waiting to give you one on your M-14 to M-1 Rifle but can't until you post a picture of your progress. Reverse engineering the M-14 is a darned fine idea but until you show us your progress in picture form, I can't give it the award. Rest assured it's in the wings but waiting documentation.

I just don't know anyone who has a digital camera ready that I'll be seeing anytime soon. I do have a scanner but it isn't currently working I'll be seeing some relatives around Christmas hopefully I can get some then.
